2025 January transfer window: Five Premier League transfers that went under the radar

New Delhi: The 2024/25 Premier League season is now heading towards the business end of the competition, and the remained of the season’s preparations wrapped up last night as the transfer window slammed shut. There have been a lot of changes in personnel during this time with new players coming into the club. Clubs like Manchester United, Wolves, and West Ham all have managers that they didn’t start the season with, leading to some moves in the market.

The winter transfer window calls for new signings as it offers the clubs a chance to assess where they’re at currently and what they would require to get their desired finish. There were some major moves in the transfer window and Aston Villa proved to be the big spenders of the league as they prepare for their first UEFA Champions League knockout campaign. Villa signed big names like Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio but clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal remained extremely quiet in the window.

While we all are excited to see what Rashford does at Villa or how Patrick Dorgu would improve Manchester United’s defensive problems, there were a few moves that flew under the radar. Some of them were finalized on the deadline day which could’ve played a part in the moves not grabbing as much attentions as they warranted. Let’s dive in to find out which transfers fans might’ve missed in the window!

5) Mathis Amougou (St. Etienne to Chelsea)

Premier League giants Chelsea were extremely inactive in terms of incomings in the entire window and left it very late in the end to do any business. The club were looking to sign a winger and a midfielder while also exploring opportunities for a striker but nothing came to fruition. They ultimately shelled out £12 million on St. Etienne midfielder Mathis Amougou on deadline day to provide some cover for Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in midfield.

The 19-year-old French midfielder joins the club after impressing in Ligue 1 and will join the first team once he clears the medical. The current plan is for Amougou to stay and learn the ropes at Chelsea, maybe get some minutes in the FA Cup and the UEFA Conference League before joining sister club RC Strasbourg on loan in the summer with current loanee Andrey Santos joining the first team set up.

4) Kevin Danso (RC Lens to Tottenham)

Tottenham were scrambling for signings towards the end of the transfer window as injuries to multiple key players have ruined their season. Things became even worse for the club as they lost Radu Dragusin to an injury in January as both their first choice defenders in Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven are very injury prone. After being rejected by both Fikayo Tomori and Axel Disasi, Spurs ultimately settled for RC Lens defender Kevin Danso.

The Austrian center back joins the London club on loan from Lens with an obligation to buy the defender in the summer for €25 million. Danso was linked to multiple clubs in the window with Juventus and Wolves both interested in him. Wolves had almost agreed a deal to sign Danso but Spurs swooped in to hijack the deal at the last minute. He became the second Lens defender to depart the club in the window after Abdukodir Khusanov.

3) Evan Ferguson (Brighton to West Ham United)

West Ham United were crying out for a striker before heading into the transfer window. They had signed Niklas Fullkrug in the summer but the German international has struggled to stay fit since his arrival, increasing the supposed striking curse on the Hammers. They were linked with many players including the likes of Elye Wahi, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Andre Silva before setting their sights on Brighton youngster Evan Ferguson.

The 20-year-old has played under current Hammers boss Graham Potter during the pair’s time together at Brighton, which led to the reunion at the London Stadium. Ferguson hasn’t seen much action since suffering major injury issues last season. He was fallen out of favour with Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler and this move to the English capital might help him rediscover the form that helped him become a teenage sensation.

2) Ben Godfrey (Atalanta to Ispwich Town)

Former Norwich City and Everton defender Ben Godfrey only moved to Atalanta in the summer from the Toffees but has made a swift return to the Premier League. After failing to establish himself at Atalanta as he wasn’t given many chances to adapt to his surroundings, the Italian club shipped him back to England. Newcomers Ipswich Town were in dire need of reinforcements in the summer but needed to do so by spending the least money they could.

This fit perfectly as Atalanta loaned out Godfrey to Ipswich on a straight loan until the end of the season as they try and stay afloat in the Premier League. Godfrey has previously been part of relegation battles for both Everton and Norwich and Kieran McKenna would be hoping that it would help him navigate safely away from the relegation zone. While Ipswich are yet to win since his arrival, the move does have potential to pay off in the end.

1) Ben Chilwell (Chelsea to Crystal Palace)

Chelsea tried to offload Ben Chilwell since the beginning of this summer Transfer window but couldn’t because of his hefty wages. It seemed like a similar case in the winter window as well fore Crystal Palace came calling for the Englishman. A talented defender, he has all the skills to become an integral member of Oli Glasner’s side this season. Chilwell plays well as a wing back and that fits perfectly into Glasner’s preferred formation as well.

He was amongst the highest wage earners at Chelsea but was frozen out of the first team by manager Enzo Maresca. He hadn’t played more than 45 minutes this season and it seems like he might get his career back on track in South London. He joins Palace on a straight loan deal before Chelsea can look to sell him on in the summer. Chilwell can help push the club for a top half finish and looks like an excellent signing for the club on paper.
