21-year-old BSC student conducts classes for IAS aspirants, buys car worth Rs 10 lakh

Kasaragod : Assistant professor Shinoj Skariachan at the St Pious college in Rajapuram in Kasaragod was taken aback last Tuesday after he came to know that his student Sayooj Chandran who is pursuing 3rd year BSC brought a car worth Rs 10 lakh when he had called him to remind on submitting his microbiology record.

The professor was informed by Sayooj that he may not be able to submit the record as he has to purchase a car and hence will not be able to come to the college.

I was surprised and shocked as why should a hard working student like him buy a car when his parents can buy a car and why should he skip the classes for that. But then i told him that he cannot miss the deadline”, said Professor Shinoj.

But Sayooj’s reply had shocked me when he said he is buying the car using his own money and not his parents”, said Shinoj Skariachan.

21-year-old Sayooj’s instant reply that he is buying the car worth Rs 10 lakh using his hard-earned money came as a surprise for many lecturers and that made him an instant celebrity in the St Pious college located in the hillside town of Rajapuram in Kasaragod district in Kerala.

In just few hours of time Sayooj became the ‘talk of the college’, not because he brought a car worth Rs 10 lakh, but how he managed to purchase it. Not even revealed to his close friends, Sayooj Chandran spends nearly two hours time after his classes for preparing a training video for the IAS aspirants and then upload it the next day before attending the classes. For those students who have clarifications, they can reach out to him through Whattasap or other social media.

Sayooj Chandran began his YouTube channel ‘IAS Hub Malayalam’, in January 2023 when he himself was aspiring for the civil service examinations which he will be appearing in March 2025. Since then, during his free time post classes, Sayooj through his YouTube channel records classes for Civil service aspirants where he records contents on the exam formats, interview formats, General knowledge and other sections that are included in the civil service exams.

I spend nearly two hours every day recording the session that are useful for the civil service aspirants. My sessions include on how to face the civil service exams, the possible topics that range from contemporary politics to sports and other sectors. For a student I charge Rs 1000 and in some cases Rs 500. I upload the video the next day. If the aspirants have any clarification, they can message me through WhatsApp”, said Sayooj Chandran to TV9.

Sayooj told TV9 that his general knowledge is borne out of intense reading of news papers and thus following the news so that he is updated about the current affairs and general knowledge.

Sayooj has school teachers, government teachers, IT professionals, home-makers and college students as his students.

Even though Sayooj was interested in Microbiology when he joined the St Pious college in 2022, slowly his interests changed. Sayooj is a follower of External Affairs Minister S Jayashankar and Shashi Tharoor.

The 21-year-old reads two newspapers on his iPad at 7 am during the bus ride to the college and whenever he gets a break in the college. Back home, he would prepare his notes based on the news reports, make video PPTs and upload them on his channel. “I then share the link with my subscribers on our WhatsApp and Telegram groups,” he said.

Sayooj started ‘SC IAS Academy’ after his name Sayooj Chandran. Later he renamed the channel as ‘IAS Hub Malayalam’.

Sayooj has completed 24 batches and is currently all set to record the classes for his 25th batch. Each batch consists of 90 to 95 students.

Once a week, he conducts analyses of the week’s news reports. In two months, he started getting 10,000 views. He started a Telegram group to share his notes in the Telegram App. Itv was later he started the YouTube channel IAS Hub Malayalam.

Sayooj’s father P Chandran is a retired Army-man and his mother Sathi Chandran is a social worker and also an MNERGS coordinator.

Sayooj is planning to appear for the UPSC examination slated for May 2025 and he believes in the theory that sharing knowledge is always the best way forward and conducting classes helps him nurture himself and be well prepared for the future.
