Wayanad landslides: 120 people dead, 98 missing from Mundakkai and Chooral Mala region

Wayanad: The hilly tourist destination of Wayanad has witnessed the biggest disaster till date with the floods and the landslides causing havoc leaving 118 people dead and more than 150 people injured. Meanwhile, 98 people are missing from the spot causing a major concern for the near and dear ones who are looking for them in the midst of a disaster.

A red alert has been issued in 8 districts of the state tomorrow.

The revenue and the district administration has barred four wheelers to travel in the ‘Thamarassery ghat’ roads as the rains are continuing.

The weather department has recorded 404 mm rainfall in the region in the past 24 hours

At the same time 48 bodies have been recovered by the relatives of those who reached the hospital. 129 people are under treatment at the VIMS hospital in Kalpatta. The state government has decided to continue the rescue and search operations in Mundakkai in the night as the government feels that the more the operations are delayed, the riskier it becomes for the hundreds of those stranded in Mundakkai region.

“This is the most challenging situation for the state. We have decided to continue the rescue operation in the night”, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan while speaking to the media.

A special dog squad has also been sent to the location. As per army sources, more than 150 people who are stranded in the region has been rescued. The army team is also planning to built more bridges across the river so that more members of the army and NDRF can reach there.

The state government has convened a high-level meeting to decide on the further course of action.
