An old video of a group of students thrashing juniors at a private degree college hostel went viral.
The police said that the incident took place on February 2 this year at Sri Subbaraya, Narayana College hostel in Narsaraopet, Andhra Pradesh during the tenure of YSRCP government. The juniors were reportedly called to the room on the pretext of NCC cadet training and were assaulted brutally.
The viral video showed the students violently beating the junior students in the name of ragging and were seen laughing, encouraging each other to continue the assault, using abusive language.
According to the police, six students in the video have been identified and a case under Prohibition of Ragging was registered against them.
“We found that degree final year students assaulted first and second year students. On the complaint of the students, we have registered a case. After investigation, we will take necessary action,” Inspector Chintala Krishna Reddy said.
He also noted that ragging was a punishable offence and urged students to report such incidents to the management and police without any delay.
The video was also shared by YSRCP social media handle and pulled up the TDP government over law and order situation in the state.
In a separate incident, a police officer in uniform was thrashed by a man at tea shop and reportedly has episodes of violence at the sight of police uniforms. The incident occurred in Tirupati and the injured cop is in recovery, reports said.
