New Delhi: Baroda unleashed carnage in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as they posted a jaw-dropping 349/5 in just 20 overs against Sikkim in Indore on Thursday, registering it the highest-ever team total in men’s T20. In the process, they also shattered a heap of records in what was their final group-stage fixture of the BCCI tournament. Baroda breached the 300-run mark in just 17.2 overs, also becoming the first Indian team to achieve the feat.
The team was carried on the back of no. 3 batter Bhanu Pania who hit a 42-ball hundred before finishing his innings unbeaten on 134 off 51 deliveries, laced with five fours and 15 sixes. Winning the toss, Baroda opted to bat first sans India all-rounder Hardik Pandya who wasn’t named in the starting XI. The Gujarat-based team wreaked havoc from the get-go as openers Shashwat Rawat and Abhimanyu Singh stitched a stand of 92 runs in only five overs before the latter lost his wicket on 53(17).
Baroda also became the first domestic team of India outside the IPL to record 100 runs within a T20 powerplay and the run-rate only increased with each passing over. Baroda were 54/0 in 2.4 overs and were astonishingly 202/2 in 10.5 overs before recording 349/5 in 20 overs. After the openers departed Pania and Shivalik Sharma carried the onslaught further. Breaching 200 in 10.3 overs, Baroda also became the fastest team to do it in T20 history.
