5 Indians to win two individual medals at Olympics ft. Neeraj Chopra Paris 2024

New Delhi: Neeraj Chopra claimed silver medal on Thursday in the men’s javelin throw final at the Stade de France. Despite a dismal performance in the 12-men final, the star Indian athlete managed to finish at the second place with his second career-best throw of 89.45m on his second attempt.

The silver medal added to India’s tally, fifth overall, though a podium finish at top was fancied across the nation. Nevertheless, Neeraj will have another opportunity to cross barriers and reclaim his Olympics gold with all eyes to shift on the Los Angeles 2028.

The 26-year-old Neeraj has joined an elite club of Indian Olympians to bag two Olympics medals in individual disciplines. Here’s a quick look at all Indian athletes to achieve the milestone.

List of Indian athletes to win two Olympic medals

5) Neeraj Chopra

Neeraj Chopra bagged silver at the Paris Olympics 2024 after his Pakistan rival Arshad Nadeem won gold with a gigantic 92.97m throw. The Indian became the first track and field athlete to win two medals at the Olympics following his gold medal at the Tokyo Games three years ago. No other athlete from any of the athletics discipline has ever finished on the podium before in the mega event.

4) Manu Bhaker

Manu Bhaker became the first Indian to account for two medals at a single edition of the Olympics. She claimed bronze medals in the women’s 10m air pistol and mixed team 10m air pistol alongside Sarabjot Singh. She had the opportunity to become the first Indian to win three medals in the Paris Games but a fourth-place finish in the women’s 25m pistol ended the dreams.

3) PV Sindhu

PV Sindhu became the first Indian woman sportsperson to win two medals at the Olympics. She was the first Indian badminton shuttler to reach the final of an Olympics across categories after she made it to the women’s singles final in the 2016 Rio Games but lost to Spain’s Carolina Marin to settle for a silver. She followed this with a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games (held in 2021 owing to Covid-19 pandemic) to muster her name in the list of elite athletes.

2) Sushil Kumar

Sushil Kumar remains India’s most accomplished wrestler with two Olympic medals in the men’s 66kg category. His first one was a silver at the 2008 Beijing Games, which shot him to prominence in the country. A bronze medal followed at the 2012 London Games, making him the first Indian athlete to bag two medals at the quadrennial showpiece post independence era.

1) Norman Pritchard

Norman Pritchard’s participation at the 1900 Paris Olympics remains to be a hot topic in the history of Indian sports. The debate over the two silver medals bagged by Pritchard in 200 metres and the 200-metre hurdles whether belongs to Britain or India has always divided opinions. But the International Olympic Committee has granted those two medals to India’s overall tally in the Olympics, and thus Pritchard will be considered the first Indian to win two medals at the grandest stage of the sport.
