New Delhi: Scotland pacer Charlie Cassell scripted history as he broke Kagiso Rabada’s record to register the best figures by any bowler on debut in men’s ODIs. Cassell ran riot in Scotland’s clash against Oman in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match at Forthill, Dundee as he picked up a stunning seven-wicket haul.
It was a dream debut for the pacer, who was included in Scotland’s squad after pacer Chris Sole made himself unavailable for matches against Oman owing to personal reasons. Cassell went on to make the most of the opportunity and shone in his first game for Scotland. The right-arm pacer registered stunning figures of 7/21 off his 5.4 overs to enter record books.
Cassell made an instant impact in the game after being introduced into the attack by his captain Richie Berrington in the 12th over. He struck on his very first ball in international cricket to trap Zeeshan Maqsoon lbw before cleaning up Ayaan Khan on a duck on his next ball, making it the first instance where a bowler picked up consecutive wickets in his first two deliveries in international cricket.
Cassell missed out on a hat-trick but struck again on the 4th ball of the over to remove Khalid Khalil on a duck, reducing Oman to 49/5 in the same over. He returned to dismiss Shoaib Khan in his next over and followed it up with the wicket of Mehran Khan in the 18th over. Cassell ended up finishing with 7 wickets in less than 6 overs while conceding only 21 runs, including a maiden.
With his stunning figures, Cassell broke the record held by South Africa pacer Rabada for the best bowling figures by a bowler on men’s ODI debut. Rabada registered figures of 6/16 on his ODI debut against Bangladesh in July 2015.

Thanks to Cassell’s sensational spell, Scotland bundled out Oman cheaply for just 91 runs in 21.4 overs. Opener Pratik Athavale top-scored for Oman with 34 off 56 balls as no other batter managed to withhold the pressure created by Cassell with his amazing bowling. Scotland chased down the target in 17.2 overs to register a thumping 8-wicket win.
Captain Richie Berrington scored an unbeaten 24 while Brandon McMullen remained not out on 37 to take their team over the line comfortably in the low-key chase.
Sacotland pacer Charlie Cassell created history against Oman by recording the best-ever figures by a bowler on his ODI debut. Cassell broke the record held by South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
