79 people injured in violent fan misconduct during football game in Germany

New Delhi:  Skirmishes between fans of Carl Zeiss Jenna and Chemie Leipzig have left 79 people injured, including five stewards, ten police officers and 64 fans of the two teams. The Local Police have said that they have filed 40 criminal and misdemeanour charges. The clashes occurred after host Carl Zeiss Jenna won 5-0.

The two sides are known for being troublemakers, and the game was designated as high risk due to past behaviours. Over 7000 spectators, including a thousand Chemie fans, had come to attend the match. There were tensions even before the game began, with 350 home team fans marching through the city without any prior notice. The march saw pyrotechnics being set off, and the local Police noted that they had to intervene with force and use of “baton and tear gas”.

Even during the game, Pyrotechnics were set off by both sides repeatedly. Germany though in recent years have had issues with fan hooliganism, in general the fans are well behaved. There was barely any evidence of trouble from fans during the Euro 2024 tournament.

Both clubs have condemned the violence with Carl Zeiss Jena suggesting that the visiting fans broke into the area of the home team’s stands. However, they noted that it was a poor end to the game and wished the victims “speedy recovery”. Chemie Leipzig, too, echoed similar thoughts and noted that a small section of their fanbase was responsible for the misbehaviour.

The club also noted that their fans had repeatedly thrown fireworks at the opposition fans and condemned the behaviour. They concluded that such behaviour shouldn’t happen in football. Both clubs have said that they will be investigating the whole event.

Match between clubs Carl Zeiss Jenna and Chemie Leipzig ended in utter chaos as fans of the two teams clashed with each other.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
