‘8 run aa chuke the Rohit bhai’: Fans lament Rohit Sharma’s needless dismissal in T20 WC final

New Delhi: The T20 World Cup 2024 final between India and South Africa was off to an electrifying start with runs and wickets coming in numbers. Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first on a flat Kensington Oval track in sunny conditions. The perfect batting conditions were quite evident in the opening over bowled by Marco Jansen. The left-arm pacer opened the proceedings with an expensive over, conceding 15 as India got off to a flying start.

But not Rohit, it was Virat Kohli, who set the tone for a big total. After Rohit knocked the first ball for a single, Kohli hit the second ball of the innings for a boundary through cover point. He followed it up with a sensational flick through the square leg and collected his third boundary of the over with a straight drive.

Rohit joined the party in the next over bowled by Keshav Maharaj. The Indian skipper got his first boundary of the match with a streaky edge over the slip cordon. His second boundary, though, was a superb reverse sweep. With five boundaries and 23 runs in eight deliveries, India were off to an electrifying start. But Rohit, staying true to his aggressive nature, went for another boundary and lost his wicket.

After scoring back-to-back boundaries, Rohit went for a hat-trick of fours by trying to sweep Maharaj against the spin from off stump. As Maharaj bowled it quite wide of off stump, Rohit had to reach for it which prevented him from getting the right timing and elevation.

Though he hit it sweetly, it went straight into the hands of Heinrich Klassen, who accepted the gift gleefully. Rohit’s dismissal came as a huge blow for the Men in Blue for it was the wicket of the player who had given the Men in Blue flying starts throughout the tournament.

Rohit’s wicket sent shockwaves across social media with users lamenting the dismissal by mentioning the needlessness of it.

India suffer early jolts

India failed to capitalised on the flying start against the Proteas. After Rohit’s dismissal, India lost Rishabh Pant two later as Maharaj bagged his second wicket of the over. The Men in Blue suffered another huge blow in the fifth over as Suryakumar Yadav was sent back to the pavillion for 3 by Kagiso Rabada.
