9/11 attacks: What happened to the other two hijacked planes?

New Delhi: On September 11, 2001, the US witnessed the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the attack and reportedly also that of the world. On that day, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group Al Qaeda hijacked four planes in the US and used them to wreak havoc as the rest of the world watched in horror and disbelief. The hijackers crashed two planes into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Overall, the attacks killed 2,977 people, and here a question arises: What happened to the other two planes that the terrorists hijacked? In this article, we will look at the other two crashes that occurred that day.

What happened to the other two planes?

The two planes that the hijackers crashed into the World Trade Center were American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175. Both the planes were hijacked by five people respectively. While those two crashes are famous for their devastation, the hijackers took control of two other planes, American Airlines Flight 77 and United Airlines Flight 93. While five militants hijacked the former, four militants hijacked the latter.

What happened to American Airlines Flight 77?

At 8:46 am, the hijackers crashed Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, but at that time, many people mistakenly thought it to be an accident. Five minutes later, at 8:51 am, another group of hijackers took control of American Airlines Flight 77. Five men forced their way to the cockpit around 30 minutes after takeoff and reportedly, neither did they physically harm anyone on board at that point nor did they make a bomb threat. However, it is believed that the hijackers later lost control of the flight and crashed it into the west side of the Pentagon.

What happened to United Airlines Flight 93?

United Airlines Flight 93 was hijacked by four men who waited 46 minutes to make their move after the takeoff. They killed at least one passenger in the process and the waiting time proved to be disastrous for them as the takeoff from the runway was also delayed. The terrorists took control of the plane at 9:28 am. They turned the plane towards the east and set the course for Washington, D.C.

The delays helped the passengers on board, who got to know about the previous attacks. They protested and tried to take control of the aircraft at 9:57 am. The passengers reached the front of the cabin and began to break the door of the cockpit. The hijackers feared they were losing control and pitched the plane into a nosedive. The plane crashed into a field near Shanksville in Pennsylvania at 10:03 am. It was around 20 minutes away from D.C. and it was possibly targeting either the White House or the Capitol Building.
