New Delhi: The globally renowned singer-songwriter and passionate Ipswich Town supporter Ed Sheeran has issued an apology after unintentionally interrupting Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim during a live post-match interview at Portman Road following Ipswich’s 1-1 Premier League draw against United on Sunday.
Amorim was managing Manchester United for the first time and was speaking to Sky Sports after the match alongside presenters Kelly Cates, ex-United captain Roy Keane, ex-Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp, and retired footballer Izzy Christiansen at Portman Road. During the interview, Sheeran approached the group to greet Redknapp, inadvertently cutting across Amorim’s pitchside media duties.
While walking into the frame, Sheeran quipped, “I don’t think he wants to speak to me,” before adding, “I love being back in the Premier League.” After briefly interacting with Redknapp, Sheeran exited the shot allowing the interview to resume.

Sheeran’s apology
Acknowledging the interruption, Sheeran took to Instagram on Monday to apologise.“Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday. Didn’t actually realise he was being interviewed at the time. Was popping to say hi and bye to Jamie. Great game, congrats to all involved,” he wrote.
Sheeran, who became Ipswich’s main shirt sponsor in 2021 and acquired a minority stake in the club earlier this year, has been a visible supporter of the newly promoted side. However, his enthusiasm during the match’s aftermath drew mixed reactions, prompting his public statement of regret.
What next…
Amorim is now preparing for his first Europa League game as the Reds Devils manager. United will host Bodo/Glimt on Thursday before Everton come to Old Trafford on Sunday. As for Ipswich, Sunday’s point keep Tractor Boys in the bottom three of the Premier League but the club and Sheeran will be hoping that their team stays in the top flight following their promotion last season.
