Gave him Vinod Kambli’s example: Ex-DC coach opens up on Prithvi Shaw’s downfall

New Delhi: Former Delhi Capitals (DC) talent scout and assistant coach Pravin Amre recently opened up on Prithvi Shaw’s downfall. Amre, who played an important part in bringing Shaw to Delhi Capitals in 2018, revealed he had cited former India cricketer Vinod Kambli’s example to Shaw a few years back but it didn’t work.

Shaw has been garnering headlines ever since going unsold in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. Once regarded as a future star of Indian cricket, Shaw found no takers at the mega auction where he had listed his name at a base price of Rs 75 lakh. The talented batter was released by Delhi Capitals ahead of the mega auction.

Shaw, who was also recently dropped from the Mumbai Ranji team, has witnessed a dramatic downfall in his cricketing career. From earning comparisons with the likes of legendary Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag at the start of his international career to failing to even get into an IPL team, Shaw has witnessed a stunning fall from grace.

“Three years back, I gave him Vinod Kambli’s example. I’ve seen Kambli’s downfall from close quarters. It’s not easy to teach certain things to this generation,” Amre was quoted saying in an interview by the Times of India.

Former India batter Kamble rose through the ranks with Tendulkar in the last 80s and the early 1990s. He also got multiple chances to make it big for India but failed to do so due to multiple controversies in his career. Kambli’s international career got derailed by the controversies as he soon faded from the limelight.

Amre claimed Shaw has already earned around Rs 30-40 crore from his IPL contracts and other deals by being part of the Delhi Capitals from 2018 to 2024. However, the talented cricketer didn’t learn how to manage money and be in good company which would have helped him focus on his game.

“Thanks to Delhi Capitals, he (Shaw) must’ve earned Rs 30-40 crore by the time he was 23. Will even an IIM graduate get that type of money? When you earn so much at such a young age, you tend to lose focus. It is important that you know how to manage money, have good friends and prioritise cricket,” Amre added.

Indiscipline hampered Shaw’s career: Amre

Shaw had joined Delhi Capitals for Rs 1.2 crore in the IPL 2018 mega auction. He was retained by the franchise for Rs 7.5 crore ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. However, the Mumbai batter failed to justify the faith shown in him by the team management and his inconsistent returns saw the franchise release him ahead of the mega auction this year.

“It was indiscipline which hampered Prithvi’s career. The hunger to come back and do well was missing,” Amre said about Shaw.

The 25-year-old batter was reportedly dropped from the Mumbai Ranji team due to fitness and disciplinary issued. The selectors deemed that Shaw was overweight and not focused on improving his fitness while it was also alleged that he would regularly miss practice sessions with Mumbai ahead of matches.

Blaming the ‘side-effects’ of the IPL, Amre also pointed out how Shaw couldn’t handle glamour and money together which saw his career go downhill. Shaw was part of the IPL for seven seasons from 2018 to 2024.

“It’s so disappointing to see that a talent like him is going in reverse direction. Someone told me that before he left for Mumbai for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, Prithvi cracked a superb century in a practice match at the Cricket Club of India Even today, he can hit a 30-ball fifty in the IPL. Maybe he couldn’t handle the glamour and money, the side-effects of the IPL,” said Amre.

Shaw is currently playing for Mumbai in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 and has not been in great form. He will be looking to bounce back among the runs and get some valuable knocks behind his back in the tournament to regain his confidence. Shaw still has a chance to play the IPL next year if some team decides to take him as an injury replacement for one of their players ahead of the new season.
