New Delhi: Team India star Virat Kohli is on the verge of breaking the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia. Kohli, who notched up a magnificent century in the first Test against the Aussies in Perth, is just one century away from surpassing Tendulkar in an elite list.
Kohli had headed into the Test series against Australia on the back of a dismal show in the three-match Test series against New Zealand at home where he managed only 93 runs. However, the senior India batter roared back to form in the Perth Test where he slammed an unbeaten 100 to play his part in the visitors’ thumping 295-run victory against Australia.
Kohli needs just one more century in the ongoing five-match series to break Tendulkar’s record for most hundreds by any batter in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Kohli’s unbeaten 100 in Perth was his 9th ton against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which saw him equal Tendulkar’s record for most centuries in the tournament history.
If Kohli manages to get a century in the remaining 4 Test matches of the series he will break Tendulkar’s record and become the first batter to score 10 hundreds in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Most centuries in Border-Gavaskar Trophy:
Sachin Tendulkar – 9
Virat Kohli – 9
Steve Smith – 8
Ricky Ponting – 8
Virat Kohli eyes Don Bradman’s record
Kohli will also be looking to break the legendary Don Bradman’s record of most centuries by a batter in a visiting country across all formats. Bradman holds the record with 11 centuries to his name in 19 matches in England. Kohli has so far notched up 10 centuries in 43 matches across formats in Australia and needs just two more tons to go past Bradman.
Kohli has a phenomenal record in Australia which has proven to be a happy hunting ground for the senior India batter. He will be looking to continue his fine form with the willow when India lock horns with Australia in the 2nd Test in Adelaide starting Friday, December 06.
