BGT: Mohammed Shami unlikely to fly to Australia immediately | Here’s why

New Delhi: There is much anticipation on Indian pacer Mohammed Shami’s availability for the remaining part of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Recent reports have suggested that the Indian selectors are awaiting for the fitness test of the 34-year-old from the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

According to a report by The Indian Express, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already prepared the kit and visa of the senior seamer, but the board will only fly him to Australia once they receive a NCA fitness clearance.

“The selection committee is waiting for the NCA’s fitness clearance report on Shami. He travelled to Bengaluru to give a fitness test. He played the Ranji Trophy as well as the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s, where he looked good. His kit is also ready. We are just waiting for the approval from the NCA,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, Shami won’t travel to the Oceania nation and can only be available for the final Test match in Sydney (January 3-7) and in the best case he could play the Boxing Day Test at MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground). There is also a possibility that the Bengal pacer might not visit Australia at all.

Shami’s Recent Domestic Performances: Wicket Tally & Economy

Mohammed Shami returned to competitive cricket on November 13 during Bengal’s Group C Ranji Trophy match in Indore. He picked up seven wickets in the match with figures of 4/54 and 3/102 as Bengal snared a 11-run enthralling win.

He then played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for his state team, accumulating eight wickets from seven matches at an economy rate of 7.67. Bengal have reached the knockouts and will play against Chandigarh in the pre-quarterfinal fixture on Monday in Bengaluru.

Shami hasn’t played in international cricket since India’s 2023 World Cup final against Australia on November 19, 2023. He last played a Test match during the 2023 World Test Championship final at The Oval.
