New Delhi: Ex-Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie on Monday tore into the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for blindsiding him and revealed the reason for quitting as Pakistan’s Test head coach. Gillespie revealed that he stepped down from the top post because of a lack of communication from PCB, which “completely and utterly blindsided” the former Aussie international cricketer.
Gillespie’s contract was set to expire in 2026 but the ex-Aussie quick resigned last week ahead of the country’s overseas tour of South Africa. Gillespie expressed his disappointment over the lack of communication from PCB and said that it felt that the Board no longer wanted him to remain in the role.
Gillespie’s resignation: A communication breakdown
“The straw that broke the camel’s back, I suppose, was, as a head coach, you like to have clear communication with your employer,” Gillespie told ABC Sport.
“I was completely and utterly blindsided by a decision to not have a high-performance coach,” he added.
PCB’s decision on high-performance coach: The breaking point
Gillespie had recommended the appointment of Tim Nielsen as the high-performance coach but the PCB didn’t renew his contract. Moreover, the cricket board didn’t even inform Gillespie about the decision and that irked the Aussie and convinced him that he was not wanted as the head coach.
What added to Gillispie’s frustration was the fact that he and PCB both had received positive feedback about Nielsen from the players.
Under Gillespie, Pakistan registered an impressive 2-1 win against England in October, after slumping to a loss in the the first match by an innings and 47 runs.
Lack of communication and selection process issues
However, after the loss in the opening Test, Gillespie was informed about a new selection panel that wouldn’t include him in any selection decision. The decision left him flabbergasted as his role as head coach diminished. Gillespie revealed that he often wasn’t aware of the team lineup until the day before a match.
The lack of clarity and communication made matters worse for the iconic Australian pacer and played a big part in his decision to resign from the top post.
