New Delhi: The Euro 2024 is all set to witness the champion after a month-long action with Spain and England vying for the continental championship on Sunday at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
The winner of the Euro 2024 Golden Boot is most likely be determined in the summit clash itself. A total of six players are currently on the top of the list for most goals in the tournament. Harry Kane (England), Dani Olmo (Spain), Cody Gapko (Netherlands), Jamal Musiala (Germany), Georges Mikautadze (Georgia), and Ivan Schranz (Slovakia) are the six players who have netted three goals each thus far.
However, England captain Kane and Spain forward Olmo will stand a chance to finish at the top if they net at least one goal in the Euro 2024 final. The two must ensure they score one goal more than the other one if both happen to put their name on the scoresheet.
In case Kane and Olmo both finish with the same number of total tournament goals then both players will share the Golden Boot award. If the two don’t score a single goal then all six players will be awarded the Golden Boot under the new rules of UEFA.
How does new UEFA rule looks different from previous editions to decide Euro Golden Boot winner?
A change in the UEFA rule allows at least six players to divide the top-scorer’s prize money. Mid-fielders Jude Bellingham (England) and Fabian Ruiz (Spain) also remain in the contention for the Golden Boot if they score a brace as the duo has scored two goals in this edition.
In the Euro 2020 (played in 2021 due to the Covid-19), Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the Golden Boot despite having netted five goals in the tournament, the same number scored by Czech forward Patrik Schick. Ronaldo pipped Schick on the virtue of scoring five goals along with an assist while the Czech player had to no assist to his name then.
If there is no goals scored by all the contenders from England and Spain than three goals will be the lowest tally for a Golden Boot winner since 2012. In the Euro 2012, Fernando Torres (Spain), Alan Dzagoev (Russia), and Mario Gomez (Germany) finished with three goals each. It was Torres who took the Golden Boot honour home after he played fewer minutes on the field than Dzagoev and Gomez.
