New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Jatin Paranjape has called out the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for not being interested in helping out-of-form batter Prithvi Shaw amid the lean patch he has been going through. After the 25-year-old was axed from the state team’s 17-member squad led by Shreyas Iyer.
This came after the destructive opener was dropped from their Ranji Trophy squad in the middle of the group stage. He made 197 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 156.34 in Mumbai’s triumphant Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign.
MCA’s outspoken take on Shaw
An anonymous official from the MCA, in conversation with news agency PTI, told Shaw is his own enemy and needs to work on his work ethic and many senior players from the squad over his fitness issues. The official also said that the team management had to hide Shaw during their fielding in SMAT as he wasn’t able to get the gasp of the ball.
On the day of Mumbai’s winning moment on Sunday (December 15), captain Shreyas Iyer said that nobody can babysit Shaw and it has to come from him to promise that he lives up to his potential.
Jatin Paranjape slams MCA
Jatin Paranjape, who played four One-Day International matches for India in 1998 and was also the national selector of the Indian team, called the MCA’s criticism on Shaw as loose comments.
“Such loose comments from sources within the MCA are truly unfortunate. Looks like they are not interested in helping Shaw out. What do they mean by “babysit” ? This will definitely be his last season as a Mumbai player,” Paranjape wrote on his X handle.
Shaw was recently named as the captain of the MCA Colts in the Police Invitation Shield Cricket Tournament 2024-25. He will lead the 18-member squad in the local tournament played in Mumbai.
Former Indian cricketer Jatin Paranjape criticized the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for its handling of Prithvi Shaw’s recent struggles. Shaw’s omission from the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad and subsequent criticism from an MCA official prompted Paranjape’s strong condemnation.
