Nathan McSweeney ‘devastated’ after being axed from Australia squad

New Delhi: Australia opener Nathan McSweeney has admitted that he felt ‘devastated’ after not being considered for the last two Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Cricket Australia on Friday rolled out the squads for the Test matches to be held in Melbourne and Sydney respectively. The series, which evenly poised at 1-1, will witness the Boxing Day Test match commencing from December 26-30 while the fifth and final match will be played in Sydney from January 03-07.

Meanwhile rookie McSweeney was dropped by the national selectors and teenage sensation Sam Kontas was handed a maiden call-up. McSweeney admitted that he felt devastated saying that it did not work the way he wanted as he was looking forward to playing the Boxing Day Test. “But it’s all part of it, and I’ll get my head down and get back in the nets and work really hard and hopefully be ready to go for the next opportunity,”

Debut in Perth Test

After making his debut in the first Test match at Perth, McSweeney failed to impress the selectors at the top of the order coming up with scores of 10, 0, 39, 10 not out, 9 and 4 in all of the six innings he played. His series of poor form was the reason behind his exclusion. Had McSweeney managed even a single good score, he would probably have continued in the set up. He got dismissed by Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah four times during the series. “It’s the game we’re in. If you don’t take an opportunity and you’re not performing as well as you want to, your position’s never safe,” McSweeney said.
