New Delhi: Tamim Iqbal, the former Bangladesh captain, has been hospitalised after suffering a massive heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) clash at the BKSP-3 ground in Savar on Monday. The veteran batter was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club in the ongoing tournament, and suddenly felt pain in his chest while fielding.

The incident occurred right after the toss in the 50-over encounter. At first, a helicopter was arranged for his movement, but he couldn’t be flown out, match referee Debabrata Paul told ESPNcricinfo.

According to a Cricbuzz report, he was soon rushed to a nearby hospital after being given medical attention on the field. “He complained of having chest pain and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was checked and underwent an ECG,” Cricbuzz quoted BCB chief physician Debashish Chowdhury as saying. “There was a little problem and at times you cannot understand immediately (actual condition of the heart).

Current status

As per the chief physician, there was a problem in his first blood test as he felt uncomfortable and wanted to return to Dhaka. An ambulance was called, and he was taken to the field, but he felt a pain in his chest again. He was brought to the hospital for the second time, and it seemed he had a heart attack. He is currently under observation at Fazilatunnesa Hospital.

The report further states that Tamim is undergoing an operation and a ring, which is a small mesh tube inserted into a blocked coronary artery to keep it open and ensure smooth blood flow, will be planted in his heart. The incident has led to several board directors rushing to Savar with the bard meeting rescheduled to next Monday.
