New Delhi: Indian teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi has yet again etched his name in the record books after becoming the youngest player from the country to play a List A cricket match. He achieved the feat when he made his debut for the Bihar men’s senior cricket team in the first round of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 on Saturday as they faced Madhya Pradesh in a Group E match in Hyderabad.
At the age of 13 years and 269 days, Vaibhav has now become the youngest cricketer from the country to play a List A match (a 50-over match). Vijay Hazare Trophy is the premier domestic competition of Indian cricket played in the One-Day International format.
The Bihar teenager broke a long-standing record of Ali Akbar, who played his firs List A match for Vidarbha at the age of 14 years and 51 days in the 1999-2000 edition. This adds to his record of being the youngest Indian to play at the Ranji Trophy and India U19 levels.
The left-handed batter, nonetheless, didn’t make this count as a memorable game as he couldn’t put any significant score next to his name. Vaibhav smashed a boundary on the first ball he faced in the innings, but then he couldn’t capitalise on the breezing start and perished on the next delivery. He was caught by Harpreet Singh off right-arm pacer Aryan Pandey’s bowling, departing for four runs from two balls as Bihar were bowled out for 196 in 46.4 overs.
Vaibhav also became the youngest player to get picked at the IPL auction last month after Rajasthan Royals secured his services for INR 1.10 crores at the IPL mega auction 2025.
Madhya Pradesh beat Bihar by six wickets
Bihar captain Sakibul Gani (48 runs off 62 balls) along with wicketkeeper-batter Bipin Saurabh (50 runs off 54 balls) had something for their bowlers to defend after Bihar made 196 in the first innings. Avesh Khan was the most successful bowler from Madhya Pradesh attack, having claimed figures of 3 for 21.
Madhya Pradesh opener Harsh Gawli set the tone for the chase with his breezy 83 runs off 63 balls laced with 11 fours and a six. Captain Rajat Patidar put on 55 from 33 balls involving four boundaries and three sixes before Venkatesh Iyer (18*) and Harpreet Singh (3*) provided the finishing touches as MP got off the mark in 25.1 overs.
Thirteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history by becoming the youngest Indian to play a List A cricket match in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
