Duleep Trophy: Dhruv Jurel levels MS Dhoni’s wicketkeeping record

New Delhi: Young and emerging Indian wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel etched his name in the record books of domestic cricket. The India A player recorded the most catches by a wicketkeeper in a Duleep Trophy innings on Sunday.

In the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2024 match between India A and India B at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the 23-year-old completed seven catches in the second innings to equal the record of former Indian skipper MS Dhoni in the prestigious red-ball tournament.

Dhoni and Sunil Benjamin jointly held the record for most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in an innings in the Duleep Trophy. However, Benjamin took six catches along with a stumping while playing for Central Zone against North Zone in 1973.

Meanwhile, Dhoni purely made all seven dismissals by taking catches behind the wickets. He achieved the feat for East Zone in a match against Central Zone in 2005 at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior.

Dhruv Jurel joined the iconic Indian gloveman after grabbing the catches of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Musheer Khan, Sarfaraz Khan, Nitish Reddy, Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore, and Navdeep Saini.

Left-arm pacer Yash Dayal picked up three wickets to put India A on the backfoot in a 275-run chase. The Shubman Gill-led side was reduced to 103 for 6 after 25 overs.

Yash removed Mayank Agarwal early in the fourth innings before inducing the edge of Riyan Parag later in the innings for Rishabh Pant to take a great catch. He then removed his state teammate Dhruv Jurel for a golden duck.

An angled away delivery poked Jurel’s edge before Yashasvi Jaiswal caught the ball at the gully. Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini and Nitish Reddy picked up a wicket apiece as India A were left with an arduous task to cut off.
