‘He’s probably late at times’: Shastri predicts future of Kohli, Rohit post MCG loss

New Delhi: Former India cricketer Ravi Shastri has commented on the future of senior Indian batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after the team lost the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia on Monday.

The Pat Cummins-led side bowled out India for 155 in the second innings on the final day of the Boxing-Day Test to complete a massive 184-run win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The top order barring Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to deliver to set the momentum for the team in the herculean 340-run chase. Rohit could add only nine runs to the team’s below-par score while Kohli made five runs before Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc got the better of the Indian veterans, respectively.

The Indian duo haven’t been consistent with the runs in the red-ball format. Kohli started the series with a brisk century in Perth but scores of 7, 11, 3, 36 & 5 cannot cover the great start. Meanwhile, Rohit, who missed the first Test owing to the birth of his second child, has managed to score just 31 runs from five innings at an abysmal 6.20 average.

How long will Rohit and Virat play Test cricket? Shastri gives his opinion

While predicting the future of the senior Indian cricketers after the Melboure Test defeat, former Indian cricket team coach Shastri had varying responses on both players/

“Think Virat will play for some time. Forget the way he got out, or whatever. I think he’ll play for another three or four years,” Shastri told Star Sports.

“As far as Rohit is concerned, it’s a call. At the top of the order, just feel the footwork isn’t the same. He’s probably late at times in meeting the ball. So, it’s his call at the end of the series.”

“At times, we’e seen in the series that his front foot isn’t really moving towards the ball as much as it should. There’s a trigger movement, and then after that, the leg stays planted,” he explained on Rohit’s footwork.

Following India’s loss in the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test, Ravi Shastri commented on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future in Test cricket. Shastri highlighted Rohit’s inconsistent performance and late arrival to the ball. Kohli’s recent inconsistent scoring, despite an initial century, also factored into the discussion.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
