New Delhi: Former Russian International Aleksei Bugayev, who represent the country at the UEFA Euro 2004 in Portugal, has been killed in the onging war in Ukraine, according to Russian media reports. The tragic news was confirmed on Sunday by Bugayev’s father, Ivan, and his agent, Anton Smirnov. “Unfortunately, the news of Aleksei’s death is true. It happened today,” Ivan Bugayev told TASS, as reported by Sport24.
His agent, Smirnov, added that the ongoing intense fighting has made it impossible to recover Bugayev’s body for burial, underlining the brutal realities of the conflict. Bugayev, aged 43, was once a promising talent in Russian football. He represented his nation in the 2004 European Championship, playing two matches in Group A. One of those games was against hosts Portugal, a match that featured stars like Luis Figo, Rui Costa, and a young Cristiano Ronaldo.
Despite his limited appearances on the international stage, Bugayev earned recognition for his defensive capabilities during his career. Domestically, Bugayev played for several Russian clubs, including Moscow sides Torpedo and Lokomotiv, as well as other provincial teams. His professional football career came to an early end in 2010, when he retired at the age of 29 while still playing for Russian outfit FC Krasnodar.
