SA vs PAK: PCB sends opener Saim Ayub to London for ankle fracture treatment

New Delhi: Pakistan opener Saim Ayub got injured while fielding in the ongoing second Test match against South Africa at Newlands in Cape Town. He got injured during the seventh over on Day 1 when Ryan Rickelton edged the ball and he went after it towards deep third man with fast bowler Aamer Jamal assisting him.

Jamal pulled the ball towards Ayub but the opener lost his balance and twisted his ankle. He had to be stretchered off the field and after the assessment, he was ruled out of the remainder of the match. As things stand, Ayub will need at least six weeks to recover from the injury.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) earlier decided that he would stay with the team and fly back to Pakistan after Newland’s Test but now sent him to London for treatment. Pakistan assistant coach Azhar Mahood will travel with him.

The PCB has faced a lot of criticism in the past for handling injured players. In 2022, Shaheen Afridi suffered an on-field injury and travelled with the team before being sent out to London for treatment. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said that the board will look after all the necessary arrangements for Ayub’s treatment.

“Saim Ayub will be checked up by the sports ortho specialist doctors in England as an immediate appointment has been made by the PCB. All resources will be used for his treatment” said PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

South Africa enforce follow on against Pakistan in 2nd Test

Temba Bavuma and Co. enforced the follow-on after they bowled out Pakistan for 194 runs to take 421 runs lead in the first innings. The Pakistan batters struggled to score runs on the flat batting pitch. The visitors lost three wickets on Day 2. Babar and Rizwan stitched a 97-run partnership for the fourth wicket on Day 3 but Maphaka dismissed Babar on 58 runs while Rizwan got out playing a rash shot. The lower order also failed to make any contribution as the Proteas men took control of the match. In the second innings, captain Shan Masood and Babar Azam stitched an unbeaten 140-run partnership for the first wicket.
