New Delhi: The Belgian national team has formally announced that they have decided to fire Italian head coach Domenico Tedesco, effective immediately. The RBFA Sports Committee decided today to terminate its partnership with national coach Domenico Tedesco after a thorough review. The Board of Directors has given its approval to this decision. According to a formal statement from the Belgian FA, the process of finding a successor has officially begun.
The Belgium national team qualified for Euro 2024 under Tedesco’s leadership after he was hired as head coach in February 2023. In the tournament itself, neither the coach nor the players fared well; they placed second in their group, which included Slovakia, Romania, and Ukraine, and lost 1-0 to France in the Round of 16. It was followed by a lackluster Nations League campaign. Six group stage games resulted in four losses, including a 1-0 setback to Italy at home. Following Lorenzo Pellergini’s first-half red card, the Azzurri also drew 2-2 with 10 men against the Belgian Red Devils in October.

Over the years the standards of this Belgian side have truly gone down and under Tedesco, despite having a good start and a good record in friendly international games, Belgium have suffered in the major International competitions. What many like to call it the “Golden generation of Belgian football,” turned out to be an unsuccessful run for the national team. The Belgians have had very little to smile about in the past few months despite their success from 2018 World Cup and other major tournaments before 2020. Their downfall needs to be studied as they focus on the new candidates who will be looking to take over the management of the Belgian Red Devils.
