New Delhi: Jannik Sinner will lock horns with home favourite Taylor Fritz in the US Open 2024 final. The American 12th seed will look to end the 21-year wait for a male Grand Slam singles title while the world number one will look forward to becoming the first Italian man to claim the Flushing Meadows singles title. A lot is at stake in this high-voltage match. Looking at the Sinner’s current form, beating him would be a mammoth task for Fritz.
Jannik Sinner started his 2024 campaign in style by clinching the first major title (Australian Open) of his career in Melbourne. After that, the 23-year-old has been on a winning streak, claiming four other titles before taking flight to New York. The world number one started his quest for the title with a four-set win over Mackenzie McDonald.
In the next two rounds, Sinner beat Alex Michelsen and Christopher O’Connell in straight sets. Even in the fourth round against Tommy Paul, he didn’t drop a set. Jannik Sinner faced a tough fight in the quarter-finals but overcame the second-set stumble to defeat world number five Danill Medvedev.
The 21-year-old was up against Jack Draper in the semi-finals. Sinner took the lead in the first set to go 4-3 up, but the latter broke back immediately to stay on even terms. However, the Italians won all three games of the set to take it. Sinner won the second set in the tie-breaker, and as Draper faded away in the third set, he took the advantage to bag all four games in a row to register a 7-5, 7-6(3), 6-2 win.

Taylor Fritz, on the other hand, has already claimed two titles this season, winning the Delray Beach Open and Eastbourne International. The 26-year-old got past Camilo Ugo Carabelli, Matteo Berrettini, and Francisco Comesana in straight sets to reach the fourth round. In the round of 16, Taylor Fritz faced a tough battle from Casper Rudd and booked a clash with Alexander Zerev. However, the biggest rival compatriot, France Tiafoe, was waiting in the semifinals.
The World No. 12 was blown away when Tiafoe turned the tables and won the set by 6-3, but the former managed to snatch the second set before it went to the tie-break. The two were evenly matched in the fourth set until Fritz took the advantage, broke his rival’s serve and went on to clinch the set. Fritz was unstoppable in the final set, dropping just one game to beat ‘Big Foe’ (4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-1).
Head-to-Head
Jannik Sinner will take on home favourite Taylor Fritz. Sinner has the chance to become the first player to claim the US Open title since Guillermo Vilas in 1977. The current head-to-head between them is poised at 1-1 and this is why the contest has become more interesting and exciting.
Fritz won the 2021 Indian Wells Masters round of 16 clash by a scoreline of 6-4, 6-3, while Sinner won the 2023 Indian Wells Masters quarterfinal by a scoreline of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Match Prediction
Jannik Sinner is advancing to his second Major final following his triumph at the Australian Open. Before the US Open, he claimed the Cincinnati Open and is even on an unbeaten streak of 11 matches. In the semifinal match against Draper, the Italian won 77% of his first serve and 56% of his return and fired 43 winners in comparison to 34 unforced errors.
Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz staged a comeback against Tiafoe to reach his first Major final. With that, he even became the first American man to reach the US Open final since Andy Roddick won it in 2006. The 26-year-old won 75% of his first serve and 36% of return points and fired 42 winners against 35 unforced errors. By far he has hit 76 aces in his six matches at the 2024 US Open.
Both players had almost similar stats in their semifinal victories. Taylor Fritz has a strong backhand and can create a lot of trouble for Sinner. Fritz also holds a unique ability to create sharp-angled crosscourt shots on both ends. Jannik Sinner needs to be ready for Fritz’s incredible topspin lobs as well before making up his mind to rush to the nets.
When it comes to Jannik Sinner he is an aggressive baseliner. The World No.1 is one of the hardest hitters on the Tour and his two-handed backhand is his biggest strength. Sinner has a lot of variation in his game be it serve and volley, sices, and even drop shots he has the potential to score from any part of the court.
Will the American giant be able to taste the slice of victory by hitting the ace work against World No.1 needs to be seen? The current form of Jannik Sinner though makes it look bit unlucky at the moment.
Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in four sets.
