New Delhi: Eva Lys from Germany scripted history at the Australian Open 2025 on Saturday by storming into the last-16 round. Lys became the first women’s singles lucky loser to reach the fourth round of the tournament in the Open era.
The German tennis player, who is ranked 128th in the world, came down to beat Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to etch her name in the history books. Earlier in the week, the 23-year-old had booked her flight back home after losing in the final round of qualifying but she was lucky enough to get a place in the main draw following Anna Kalinskaya’s withdrawal from the first Grand Slam of the season.
Eva Lys books Round 4 clash with Iga Swiatek
With as many as three back-to-back wins, the German player has booked a fourth round clash with none other than world number two Iga Swiatek. In the first set, she was given a tough fight by her opponent but she bounced back strongly in the next two to take the match. The contest is going to be a thrilling one as Swiatek also enters the fourth round on back of fabulous wins in the ongoing even. If she is able to counter her and move further, it will be a big moment for the player.

Svitolina stuns Paolini
In another women’s singles clash, Elina Svitolina stunned fourth Jasmine Paolini in the third round of the Australian Open to storm into the Round of 16. Ukraine’s Svitolina beat the Italian 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, on Margaret Court Arena, with a complete dominance in the final and deciding set where Paolini, who hold a good record at the Grand Slam, wasn’t able to score a point.
