New Delhi: A Bangladeshi court has issued an arrest warrant against cricketer Shakib Al Hasan in connection with a cheque fraud case. The former national team captain was a former MP of the deposed Awami League government, headed by Shaikh Hasina, who has been in exile in India since being forced to leave the country due to an student unrest.

The all-rounder was among four invididuals against whome the warrant was issued in the case involving IFIC Bank. Shakib has stayed abroad since erstwhile Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka.

Shakib was initially named in the cheque fraud case on December 15 and on Sunday Dhaka’s additional chief metropolitan magistrate Ziadur Rahman issued an order in which he was named.

IFIC Bank had filed a case against Shakib for a total sum of over $300,000 (Rs 2.6 crore approx.). The Dhaka court had earlier summoned the left-handed cricketer on December 18 to make an appearance on January 19, but since he didn’t the warrant was issued.
