New Delhi: Indian opener Smriti Mandhana and all-rounder Deepti Sharma were included in the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year 2024 as announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday. South Africa international batter Laura Wolvaardt was named the captain of the team.
Mandhana scored 747 runs in 13 One-Day International innings at an average of 57.46 with the help of four centuries and three half-centuries. She was the highest run-scorer in the format in the previous calendar year with Wolvaardt being at the second spot with 697 runs.
She went on to become the most centurion in ODIs for India in the women’s category. Mandhana’s 10th ODI ton helped her surpass former skipper Mithali Raj’s mark at nine. Wolvaardt made her career-best score of 184* against Sri Lanka in the third ODI in Potchefstroom in April.
Deepti earned the Player of the Series award for her all-round brilliance in the ODI series against New Zealand for picking six wickets and scoring 56 runs. She mustered figures of six for 31 against the West Indies in the final ODI in Vadodara as India swept the series 3-0. The Uttar Pradesh player finished the year with 186 runs at 31 while returning with 12 wickets at an average of 27.
Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu and West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews were slotted in to bat at No.3 and No.4, respectively. South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp was slotted in to bat No.5 with star Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner coming at No.6. England’s Amy Jones was named as designated wicketkeeper-batter.
Annabel Sutherland and Kate Cross are the two top pacers picked in the ICC’s team of the year. Kapp is the third seam bowler as well. Sophie Ecclestone, who became the fastest bowler to reach 100 wickets in Women’s ODIs, is the frontline spinner in the team. Deepti, Matthews and Gardner are the spin bowling all-rounders in the ICC Women’s ODI of the Year 2024.
