Mitchell Owen: Meet the breakout star of BBL 14 who has put IPL teams on red alert

New Delhi: Mitchell Owen emerged as the breakout star of the Big Bash League 13 with a sensational season in Australia’s premier T20 competition. Owen smashed the joint-fastest hundred in the history of BBL to power Hobart Hurricanes to their maiden title victory following a seven-wicket win over Sydney Thunder in the final at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart.

Owen notched up his second BBL century in just 39 balls and equalled the record of Craig Simmons, who smashed a 39-ball ton for the Perth Scorchers in 2014. Owen’s sensational knock helped the Hurricanes win their first title since the inception of the league in 2011.

Riding on Owen’s remarkable century, the Hurricanes chased down the 183-run target in just 14.1 overs. Earlier, Thunder had posted a competitive total of 182 for 7 courtesy of Jason Sangha’s 67 and David Warner’s 48. The opening pair gave the Thunders a superb start by adding 97 runs in 10.2 overs.

Who is Mitchell Owen?

Hailing from Tasmania, Owen 23, made his debut in the Big Bash League in 2021 but failed to get enough opportunities to show his potential. But after being given the chance to open in BBL 14, he showcased his talent and finished as the highest run scorer in BBL 14 with 452 runs, including two centuries in 11 matches.

Owen’s cricket dream took shape in 2020 with his first state contract with Tasmania. He earned the contract after a remarkable performance in the 2019-20 Under-19 National Championships, where he aggregated 415 runs at an average of 60.

Owen made his List A debut for Tasmania in February 2021 and his First-Class debut in October 2023 against South Australia.

IPL teams on red alert

While Owen didn’t register for the IPL 2025 mega-auction, he is a player IPL franchises could target in the future. Owen didn’t register for the IPL 2025 mega-auction and according to the guidelines players who don’t register for the auction are ineligible to register in the following year. That means Owen will not be able to feature in IPL for at least two years (IPL 2025, 2026)

However, Owen’s performances in BBL 14 have put IPL franchises on red alert and if he continues to perform consistently, an IPL contract might be within his reach soon.
