New Delhi: Veteran archer Deepika Kumari won the individual gold medal in women’s category while upcoming Juyel Sarkar made a mark to become the recurve champion at the 38th National Games in Dehradun on Thursday.

On the penultimate day of archery competitions, Olympian Deepika claimed two gold medals – one in the individual event the other in a team contest.

But it was 18-year-old Juyel who caught the eye after beating another Olympian Tarundeep Rai 6-2 in the semi-finals before getting the better of Indra Chand Indra 6-4 in the final.

2010 Asian Games silver medallist Rai grabbed bronze with a win over Rahul of Services 6-2 while Deepika defeated Ankita 6-4 for gold.

Vikas Rana and Karishma Diwan won their respective canoe extreme slalom competitions on Thursday. In the men’s category, Rana finished above Amit Thapa (silver) and Naveen Kumar (bronze) while Karishma dominated the women’s event to be above Elizabeth Vincent (silver) and Devi (bronze).

Deepika combined with Komalika, Ankita Bhakat and Tamanna Verma but Jharkhand lost to Maharashtra in 0-6 in the women’s team final as Haryana bagged bronze.

Jharkhand’s men’s recurve team of Goldi Mishra, Shrey Bhardwaj, Vishnu Choudhary and Gurucharan Besra beat Uttar Pradesh 5-4 to win gold as Services claimed bronze.
Maharashtra’s Shukmani Gajanan Babrekar and Gatha Anandrao Khadake won the recurve mixed team event gold medal.

Karnataka in tennis final

SD Prajwal Dev won his singles and doubles matches to help defending champions Karnataka beat Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) to enter the final of the tennis event.

Karnataka face second seeds Tamil Nadu, who defeated Maharashtra 2-1 in the other semi-final, in the gold medal match on Friday.

Karnataka trailed early on as Niki Poonacha lost 4-6, 6-1, 1-6 to Services’ Rishab Agarwal. But Prajwal Dev pulled the team back with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Ishaque Iqbal.

The 28-year-old teamed up with Nik to beat Faisal Qamar and Rishab Agarwal 6-3 6-4 to ensure Karnataka’s passage to the final.

Karnataka, however, lost 1-2 to Tamil Nadu in the quarter-final of the women’s section.
