New Delhi: Team India skipper Rohit Sharma returned to form with a blistering century in the 2nd ODI against England at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday. Amid questions over his future and intense scrutiny of his prolonged lean patch for India across formats, Rohit responded to his critics in style with a match-winning knock of 119 runs off 90 balls.

It was a terrific knock from the Indian skipper, who looked confident from the word go and took the England bowlers to the cleaners. Rohit ended a 16-month-long century drought in ODIs with his 119-run knock to buy himself much-needed breathing time ahead of the all-important Champions Trophy 2025 where he is set to lead India.

Rohit’s ton also helped him overtake the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in an elite all-time list. The Indian skipper went past Tendulkar to become the 2nd highest run-getter for India as an opener in international cricket. Tendulkar, the leading run-getter of all time in international cricket, finished his career with 15,335 runs in 346 matches as an opener across all formats.

Rohit went past the Master Blaster en route to his century on Sunday and now has 15,404 runs in 343 matches at an average of 45.43 across formats. Rohit remains behind Virender Sehwag, who holds the top spot with 15,758 runs as an opener across all formats. However, the Hitman is within touching distance of overtaking Sehwag.

Most runs for India as an opener in international cricket:

Virender Sehwag – 15,758 runs

Rohit Sharma -15,404 runs

Sachin Tendulkar – 15,335 runs

Rohit’s ton also saw him surpass India legend Rahul Dravid to break into the list of the top ten highest run-getters in ODI history. Rohit now has 10987 runs in 267 matches at an average close to 50 with 32 centuries and 57 fifties in ODIs, edging past Dravid, who amassed 10889 runs in 344 matches at an average of 39.16.

Rohit’s 119-run knock was laced with 7 sixes which helped him overtake West Indies legend Chris Gayle in the list of batters with the most sixes in ODI history. Rohit now has 338 sixes in ODIs, seven more than Gayle, who finished with 331 sixes in the fifty-over format. Rohit is second on the list of batters with the most sixes in ODIs, behind only Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, who smashed 351 sixes in his ODI career.
