New Delhi: Indian chess Grandmaster R Vaishali has revealed two key objectives she wants to achieve in the her professional life in the ongoing year. Vaishali, who had a remarkable last year with a series of career-defining milestones, has said that she wants to deliver a series of consistent performances along with securing a spot in the coveted Candidates Tournament.

The 23-year-old became only the third woman from the country to bag the prestigious Grandmaster title, playing a pivotal role in India’s gold medal-winning performance at the Chess Olympiad along with bagging a bronze medal at the World Blitz Championship in 2024. While the objectives set by the Indian chess player seem to be many, but she has already started the preparation with a fabulous run in the year bygone.

Main goal is to showcase consistent performances: Vaishali

In an interaction with news agency PTI, the Indian chess player said that he key objective is to showcase consistent performance throughout the year and play some good matches which can help her achieve the the other objectives cleanly. Further shedding light on her professional aims, Vaishali said that she wants to qualify for the Candidates Tournament by the end of the year.

The Women’s Candidates Tournament determines the challenger for the world chess championship and the Indian player, who got an opportunity to participate in the coveted tournament last year also, wishes to participate in the tournament this year also with a further aim lined up. Talking about her bronze at the Blitz World Championship, she said that the outcome of the effort was specially important for her confidence, after a series of disappointing tournaments.

Apart from the highs, Vaishali said that she also experienced many lows in the year that cost her some rating points but she is not feeling dejected as she considers the lows as valuable experiences.

“I would say it was a mixed year. I achieved some good results, but I also lost some rating points. It was a very interesting experience,” she reflected. The Chennai-based player recently finished ninth in the Challenger section of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament.
