New Delhi: Santos FC winger Neymar Jr. has been linked with a comeback to his former club, FC Barcelona. The Brazilian joined Santos FC in the January transfer window after a string of injuries in the Saudi Pro League. Weeks after his move to Brazil, speculation surfaced indicating that Neymar was considering a return to top-level European football. According to Spanish media station Cadena SER, Neymar wants top clubs to bet on him so he can compete for the finest championships once more. According to the same report, Neymar would soon accept an offer from Barcelona above all others. Neymar’s aim is to have one last dance at his former club Barca.   

The 33-year-old wants to prove his worth in Brazil, as he believes that an impactful stint at Santos can earn him a return ticket to Camp Nou. Neymar Sr., explaining his son’s decision to sign only a five-month deal with Santos, said, “We didn’t come here to play for five months; we came to give Santos the opportunity to restructure during this time, to find allies who can help the club get back on its feet. And many people have shown up.”

After scoring and assisting a goal in Santos’ 3-1 win against Agua Santa, Neymar clarified his decision to return home. He said, “I didn’t want a long contract because I didn’t know I would come back. I didn’t know how I was going to feel playing. I think anything can happen.” The Brazilian further added that the club is helping him find his form and rediscover joy.

Neymar’s Barcelona Legacy

Neymar is one of the most celebrated Brazilian stars at Barcelona due to his magical spell with the Blaugrana between 2013 and 2017. He joined Barca at the age of 21 from Santos for a reported €88 million fee. The Brazilian was also part of the famous Barca trio ‘MSN’ alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. He went on to win various trophies in Spain, including a club treble in 2015.  

In 186 appearances for Barcelona, the winger scored 105 goals and provided 76 assists. Neymar left the club in 2017 for a world-record €222 million fee to join Paris Saint-Germain, a move that significantly altered his career. Since his departure, he has struggled with fitness in Ligue 1 and the Saudi Pro League.   
A potential return of Neymar to Barcelona, like previous rumours, seems unlikely. However, the 33-year-old seems determined to prepare for the 2026 World Cup, which may be his last opportunity to lead Brazil to glory on the international stage.
