New Delhi: UEFA Europa League final 16 draw have been declared with Manchester United clashing against Real Sociedad with Tottenham Hotspur facing AZ Alkmaar. The Scottish Premiership side Rangers are set to meet Fenerbahce. A win for United would mean they will either face FCSB or Lyon in the quarter-finals.
In this new format of the Europa League, the top eight teams from the competition got an automatic qualification to the final 16 stage with the rest eight teams joining following the completion of the play-off round. The first legs of the fixtures will be played on March 6th and the second leg is set to happen on March 13th.

With five wins and three draws from the eight league games, United finished third in the league stage. Real Sociedad came to the clash having beaten Denmark’s Midtjylland with a 7-3 aggregate score in the two playoff legs. The two side’s last meeting was at Old Trafford in the 2022-23 season which ended in a 1-0 win for Sociedad and led to United finishing with the same scoreline at Anoeta. For United, their Europa League performance has been the highlight of this season which has been marked by inconsistent performance on the field.
Tottenham have won five times in their league phase games to finish fourth while AZ Alkmaar are in the final-16 stage after knocking Galatasaray 6-3 on aggregate. Spurs have already faced Alkmaar winning 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with Richarlison scoring the winner from the penalty spot.
Rangers finished eighth after they managed to beat Union Saint-Gilloise on the final matchday of the league stage. Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce won 2-5 in aggregate against Anderlecht with their second leg ending in a 2-2 draw.
The quarter-finals of the Europa League are set to happen over April 10th and 17th with the semi-finals first-leg is set for May 1 with the second leg being played on May 8th. The final is set to be played at Athletic Club’s Estadio San Mames in Bilbao on May 21st.
