New Delhi: The finish line is in sight, and the countdown has begun as Liverpool can almost taste Premier League glory this weekend. With a commanding lead at the top of the table, the Merseyside giants are just a couple of wins away from lifting their 20th English top-flight title the one that would see them draw level with arch-rivals Manchester United for the most league titles in English football history.

This weekend could witness the Reds achieve the silverware. If Arsenal slip up in their early kickoff at Ipswich on Sunday, Liverpool will get the chance to seal the title later that day by defeating Leicester. If not this weekend, then on Wednesday, they will have the opportunity to wrap it up on Wednesday when the Gunners host Crystal Palace, or next weekend at Anfield against Tottenham Hotspur. It’s not a question of if anymore rather just when.

Slowing down near the finish?

Liverpool have been at the top for most of the season but their recent form has shown signs of wear and tear. The big cushion over Arsenal has meant the Reds haven’t needed to maintain their early-season intensity, and that’s reflected in some of their recent performances.

Narrow wins against West Ham and Everton were unconvincing, while a loss to Fulham marked their second defeat of the season. They have also lost to PSG in the Champions League and Newcastle United in the League Cup final, and it seems like Arne Slot’s side is limping across the line rather than sprinting.

Still, it’s hard to argue with the results over the course of a season, as Arsenal’s failure to maintain consistency in the league has gifted the Reds breathing room. Despite an impressive run in Europe, including a recent knockout blow to defending champions Real Madrid, Arteta’s men have only managed two wins in their last seven fixtures. This allowed Liverpool to enjoy the luxury of not having to be anywhere near its best at a time credentials should have been put under pressure.

Eyes on the record

If Liverpool clinches the title, this would mark their 20th league triumph, tying with Man United. The Reds were English football’s dominant force for a long period, winning 18 titles by 1990.  Then came the Sir Alex Ferguson era at Old Trafford, and United went on to win 13 Premier League titles between 1993 and 2013, pulling ahead while Liverpool endured a painful 30-year title drought.

That spell was finally broken in 2020 when Liverpool stormed to the league under Jurgen Klopp. Now, with United struggling in mid-table (currently 14th in the standings) and going through another rebuild under new manager Ruben Amorim, the Reds look better positioned to set the pace again at the top of English football.

It’s a remarkable achievement for a team adjusting to life under a new head coach. In his debut season, Arne Slot not just ignited the desire but also laid the foundation for a brighter future. With Mohammed Salah and Virgil van Dijk reportedly committing their future to the club will guide the young generation to sustained success.

What lies ahead

After signing a new contract with the club Van Dijk hinted at exciting times ahead for the club. “Whatever happens in terms of players going out, players coming in, I think it should be a big summer,” he said. “They’re planning to make it a big summer, so we all have to trust the board to do the right job.”

With just one signing made last summer, Liverpool are expected to be quite active in the upcoming transfer window. Strengthening the squad now could help Slot build a side capable of not only winning titles but dominating the domestic scene for years to come.

The timing may be perfect for the Reds with Manchester City set to lose Kevin De Bruyne, and some of their other key players, like Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan, aren’t getting any younger. That could open the door for a new era of dominance at Anfield, especially if Arsenal continue to falter when the pressure mounts.

For now, Liverpool fans will be glued to the results this weekend. Whether the champagne is popped on Sunday, Wednesday, or next week at Anfield, one thing is clear that title number 20th is coming home. And with the title in reach, the race for the historical supremacy in English football is far from now.
