‘Emotional moment for me…’: Rohit Sharma opens up on Wankhede Stadium stand name honour

New Delhi: Team India skipper Rohit Sharma expressed his pleasure on getting a stand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium named after him. The venue has been nothing short of a temple for Rohit, who as a Mumbai player, has played a lot on the ground. A local Mumbai boy practicing at Azad Maidan and dreaming of getting into the Wankhede, Rohit reminisced about his childhood playing days.

Earlier in the week, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) had announced that the Leve 3 stand of the Divecha Pavilion will soon be named as the “Rohit Sharma Stand.” Rohit spoke at an event which announced him as the brand ambassador of the third edition of the T20 Mumbai League, on Friday.

“To get this kind of honour, having a stand named after you, is something that I cannot imagine. But once I see my name there on the stand, it will be a very emotional moment for me and like I said, from not having to enter the stadium and now to have a stand, those two moments, so much has happened between these two moments so I am forever grateful,” Rohit said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

“No one dreams of things like this when they are just starting off playing cricket. I still remember those days when I used to stand outside Wankhede Stadium just to enter and watch Mumbai Ranji Trophy team practice,” Rohit reminisced.

“We used to finish our U-14, U-16 training at Azad Maidan. Me, with a few of my friends, used to travel across the railway track to go and just get a glimpse of some of the Ranji Trophy cricketers. I know how tough it was to get inside the Wankhede Stadium back then.”

“Now, to sit back and think that there is going to be a stadium stand in my name, it is such an unreal feeling. It is something that I have never thought of, and I will be forever grateful for this big honour in my life,” the former MI skipper added.

Rohit’s IPL 2025

Rohit, who previously captained Mumbai Indians (MI) to five titles in the Indian Premier League (IPL), isn’t having the best time in the ongoing edition. His highest score of the season came on Thursday when he scored 26 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede. He has been subjected to a lot of criticism due to his dismal run this season, as he has failed to reach even 50 runs in six matches. Leaving the Hyderabad fixture, Rohit has scores of 0, 8, 13, 17, 18 in the other games he has played this season, amassing only 82 runs.

Rohit Sharma will soon see a stand at the Wankhede Stadium named after him as decided by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) in a recent general body meeting.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
