New Delhi: Arsenal are set to release 20 players from their men’s first-team squad, women’s first-team squad, U-21s and the U-18 levels after the conclusion of the Premier League 2024-25 season. Arsenal once again failed to go the distance in the Premier League as they finished a distant second behind champions Liverpool to miss out on the league title.
After a disappointing season, Arsenal have decided to let go of several players, as confirmed by their retained list, which was released on Wednesday. Jorginho and Kieran Tierney are among the big names who will be leaving Arsenal after their contracts expire on June 30, as they didn’t feature in the list of retained players for the club.
Italian midfielder Jorginho is reportedly set to sign for Brazilian club Flamengo after leaving Arsenal. He signed for the Gunners in 2023 on a £12m transfer from his former club Chelsea. The Italian midfielder enjoyed decent success in his first season at the club before fizzing out. He has so far made 79 appearances for Arsenal across competitions.
Meanwhile, Scottish defender Tierney joined Arsenal from Celtic in 2019. The left-back failed to cement his spot in the XI after struggling with his form and fitness issues. Tierney made 13 appearances for Arsenal in the 2024-25 Premier League season and scored a solitary goal for Arsenal. The club has been trying to offload the defender for a while now, but has failed to do so.
Tierney is reportedly set to return to his boyhood club Celtic ahead of the new season. He has made 104 appearances for Arsenal across competitions while scoring four times since joining the club in 2019. He spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Real Sociedad, making 20 appearances for the Spanish club. Raheem Sterling, who joined Arsenal on loan from Chelsea for the 2024-25 season, is also set to be released.
Sterling will return to Chelsea after struggling with form at Arsenal. The England forward managed to score only one goal in 28 appearances for Arsenal during his loan spell.
Thomas Partey in talks over a new deal
Meanwhile, midfielder Thomas Partey is reportedly in talks with Arsenal for a new deal at the club. Partey’s contract is set to end in June this year. However, Arsenal value him as an important member of the squad and want the midfielder to stay.
