Jobe Bellingham has followed in the footsteps of his elder brother after signing a five-year deal on Tuesday with the German giants. Jobe joins a club where his big brother evolved into a world-class midfielder, which helped him sign a lucrative deal at Real Madrid in 2023.
The younger Bellingham leaves English football club Sunderland just over a fortnight after playing a key role in the club’s promotion back to the Premier League. He joined Dortmund for a reported transfer fee of £30 million (including add-ons) after reportedly turning down an offer from Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt.
Sunderland have confirmed that a sell-on clause is also included within the agreement.
Bellingham is eligible to play Dortmund’s Club World Cup fixtures in the United States. He will wear No. 77 at the tournament, Dortmund announced.
Dortmund start their CWC campaign against Brazil’s Fluminense on June 17 before taking on Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa on June 21 and South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai four days after that.
Following in Jude’s footsteps
Similar to Jude, Jobe is a central midfielder who likes to move forward towards the final third and support attacks.
Like Jude, Jobe also came through the Birmingham City academy and made his senior debut at the age of 16 in 2022. He’s also represented England at the Under-21 level.
However, there are some differences between the two Bellinghams.
Jobe is two years older than Jude was when he joined Dortmund in 2020. Unlike Jude, Jobe has experience of playing a striker’s role in some games for Sunderland.
Bellingham was named the league’s young player of the year in April and picked in the team of the season courtesy of his consistent performances for Sunderland in the second-division Championship.
He made 70 appearances over two years for Sunderland.
Bellingham will play Champions League next season following Dortmund’s final day heroics that helped them rise to fourth in the Bundesliga table and secure the coveted European spot.
