‘Surgery’ of sacking two selectors makes no sense, says Shahid Afridi

New Delhi: Shahid Afridi doesn’t find any sense in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to sack national selectors Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq.

Terming it a needless ‘surgery’, the former skipper instead wants the PCB to take a call on captaincy of Babar Azam after the team endured another failure in the T20 World Cup.

Babar was re-instated as skipper in place of Afridi’s son-in-law Shaheen Shah before the T20 World Cup but they exited the tournament in the group atage.

“This surgery makes no sense to me… sacking just two selectors,” said Afridi in Birmingham on the sidelines of the the World Legends Championship where he is playing.

“Babar has got a full open chance to lead Pakistan. He has been given enough time to show his worth as captain. Now whatever surgery the PCB wants to do, they should take their decision,” the all-rounder said.

“I have also captained Pakistan and so have Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq but whenever the team has performed badly in the World Cups, first thing the captain faces the knife (sic),” he said.

Afridi called for a new captain to be appointed pointing out Babar’s record of leading in four World Cups and two Asia Cups without success.

Pakistan hired Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie as coaches for white-ball and Test team prior to the T20 World Cup and Afridi said they should be given ample time before making a judgement on them,

“Whatever decision the PCB takes it should take but it should give time to the captain, coach and the system to work,” he added.
