New Delhi: Over the past few years, the temperature of our planet has significantly increased, resulting in extreme heat during the summer, heavy rainfall during the monsoon and bone-chilling cold during the winter. The extreme global temperature is the result of global warming, which is primarily fuelled by several human activities such as deforestation, a spike in the use of vehicles emitting harmful pollutants in the atmosphere, and others. Thus, June 5 is annually observed as World Environment Day. The main agenda of the day is to highlight land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. The awareness programmes organised on this special day based on a specific theme.
What is the theme for the observation of World Environment Day (WED) 2024
The first celebration of World Environment Day (WED) took place under the slogan “Only One Earth” in 1973, a year later when the UN General Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day (WED) in 1972 while World Environment Day (WED) 2024 will be observed under the theme ‘Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience.’
The theme of the event will focus on environmental issues, from air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, light pollution, and plastic waste to energy conservation and sustainable consumption. As it will mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the slogan of the events will be “Our Land. Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration”. Land restoration is considered to be the basis of the observation of World Environment Day 2024 and various organisations with similar thoughts will come together to discuss steps supporting the restoration of ecosystems.
Significance of the theme of World Environment Day (WED) 2024
As per the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, around 40 per cent land of our planet is degraded, directly affecting half of the global population and threatening approximately half of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Since 2000, the number and duration of droughts have significantly increased by around 29 per cent. It is noted that, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world’s population by 2050, if necessary actions are not taken.
Land restoration is one of the main element of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), which is a major initiative for the protection and revival of ecosystems across the globe. Additionally, it is a crucial element in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
