Tamil Nadu: Forest officials arrest 30-year-old man from Tiruppattur for eating snake

Tirupattur: L Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Perumapattu near Tiruppattur, was arrested by forest officials after he was seen skinning a rat snake and soaking it in water. The probe revealed that he had cooked and eaten the snake.

The forest department officials produced him in court and imprisoned him. According to local sources, Gunasekaran’s son Rajesh Kumar (30) hails from Perumapattu posted a video on social media where he appears to be skinning a snake.

Based on this, according to the order of Tirupattur Division District Forest Officer Mahendran, Tirupattur Forest Officer Cholarajan headed by the forester and forest staff conducted an investigation based on this video and went to Perumapattu village and arrested Rajkumar.

Further investigation revealed that he killed a snake, skinned and cooked it and ate it. The officers who arrested Rajesh Kumar produced him in the Tirupattur court on the basis that it is a crime under the Indian Forest Act to torture and kill a snake.

Similarly, a few days ago, a popular YouTuber from Pudukottai district killed a water snake that entered the town and then recorded a video on his YouTube page talking about it as if it were a poisonous snake.

In another similar incident, Forest Department arrested two individuals for illegally handling an Indian rat snake and posting a video of it on social media, which went viral on May 25. The snake, listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, is a protected species.
