Tamil Nadu govt to extend minibus services coverage across state

Chennai: In a measure to ensure last-mile connectivity in rural areas the Tamil Nadu government notified the draft New Comprehensive Mini Bus Scheme, 2024. According to the new draft, the operators will be allowed to operate a maximum permitted route of 25 km, earlier it was 20 km. Of the 25 km, the maximum unserved route length shall be 17 km and the maximum served route length shall be 8 km.

RTOs will decide on the operations

A draft report on an integrated minibus project has been published to run minibusses on narrow roads and streets across the state. Accordingly, the RTOs will decide on which routes and how many buses will be allowed for mini-bus services across Tamil Nadu, and mini-buses will be allowed to operate up to a maximum distance of 25 km. It is said that permission will be given on the 18 km unserviced route and the 8 km serviced route.

A minibus can have a maximum seating capacity of 25 passengers without the driver and conductor and all mini buses should be equipped with GPS facility.

The public can submit their comments on the draft report within 30 days, and according to this, the public has been asked to submit their comments by July 14.

Minibus services in Chennai

In Chennai, the minibus service will be provided to Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi, and, Solinganallur. At the same time, the minibus service route will not be provided to Thandaiarpet, Rayapuram, Tiruvik Nagar, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, and Adyar as locations have already been widely covered by MTC bus services.

A consultation meeting in this regard will be held on July 22 at the state Secretariat, Chennai under the leadership of the Principal Secretary, of Home Affairs. It is expected that minibusses will be operational in a few months after the feedback meeting is over.
