Telangana phone-tapping case: Accused T Prabhakar Rao writes to investigators, refutes his role

Hyderabad: Ex-Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) chief T Prabhakar Rao, who is named as one of the accused in the phone-tapping case, wrote to the investigative authorities and refuted his role in the case.

In a letter dated June 23, he wrote that his physical and mental health deteriorated due to the stress he has been subjected to after the registration of the case.

“In addition to my existing malignant cancer, I have developed high BP due to the stress I have been subjected to.  Wild and false allegations have been made against me with constant leaks to media, assassinating my character even before making me as an accused in the case,” he wrote.

“I have not committed nor directed anyone to commit any illegal acts or omissions while discharging my duties as a police officer at any time including as chief of SIB. While assuring to cooperate and answer all queries in person as soon as my health improves and upon my return to India, I am prepared to assist in the investigation in any kind of questioning over video conferencing or teleconferencing till the time I return to India. I request you to conduct a fair and unbiased investigation as per the provisions of law” writes Prabhakar Rao.

Who are the accused in the case? 

Four accused have been arrested so far in the case, including former DCP of Hyderabad Police Taskforce Radha Kishan Rao, suspended SIB officer Praneeth Rao, Additional Superintendents of police N Bhujanga Rao, Tirupathanna. A charge sheet filed by the police named T Prabhakar Rao and a media executive as accused along with four others.

The phone-tapping case revolves around allegations of widespread phone monitoring and surveillance of many political leaders, journalists during the previous BRS government led by ex-cm KCR.
