Mitchell Starc breaks Lasith Malinga’s record in World Cup

New Delhi: Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has etched his name in history during his side’s Super 8 clash against Bangladesh at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

Starc took the wicket of Tanzid Hasan in the first over of the innings against Bangladesh and broke the record of Sri Lankan pace bowler Lasith Malinga. Starc picked up his 95th World Cup wicket (ODI+T20I) and surpassed Malinga’s record of 94 wickets.

The left-arm pacer took his 95th wicket in his 52nd World Cup match and has a chance to take 100 wickets by the end of the ongoing T20 World Cup. Shakib Al Hasan is third on this list with 92 wickets and Trent Boult is in fourth spot with 87 wickets.

Australia defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs in their first Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024. Their bowlers restricted the Bangladesh batters to 140 runs. Pat Cummins took a hat-trick, and Adam Zampa picked up two wickets. Stoinis, Maxwell and Starc also got one wicket each.

Chasing the target of 140, openers Travis Head and David Warner provided Australia a flying start. The Men in Yellow were cruising to a stunning victory but the rain came back and the Aussies were well ahead of the DRS target and they won the match by 28 runs (DLS).

Australia will next face Afghanistan on June 22 at Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent and after that, they will take on India at Daren Sammy National Stadium in St Lucia on June 24.
