Hattrick of World Cup gold medals for Indian women’s compound archery team

New Delhi: India compound women’s archery team created history on Saturday after bagging a hattrick of gold medals at the ongoing World Cup in Turkey. The team comprising Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur continued their imperious form this season in the big event with a win over Estonia in the third stage.

The trio, who had qualified into the the event as the top seed, overpowered Estonia’s Lisell Jaatma, Meeri-Marita Paas and Maris Tetsmann 232-229 in what tuned out to be a one-sided contest. With this victory, the women’s team have maintained their unbeaten run this season, having clinched the World Cup Stage 1 and Stage 2 gold medals in Shanghai and Yecheon in the months of April and May respectively.

At Stage 3 in Antalya, the Indian women’s team began their campaign with a first-round bye in a field of just 10 countries. They then showcased their skill and determination by defeating El Salvador 235-227 and the host nation, Turkey, 234-227, to secure their place in the final. Against Estonia, the Indian archers maintained their composure and accuracy, sealing their third consecutive gold medal.

In the recurve section, Ankita Bhakat and Dhiraj Bommadevara are also in the hunt for two medals, having advanced to their respective individual semifinals

In contrast, the top-ranked Indian men’s compound team, comprising Priyansh, Abhishek Verma, and Prathamesh Fuge. faced a very tough journey and could not emerge victorious. The valiant team narrowly missed out on a place in the final after a dramatic semifinal shoot-off against Turkey. Both teams were tied at 236, but Turkey edged out India by shooting closer to the center in the shoot-off (30*-30).
