New Delhi: The contest every fan is eagerly waiting for is finally here. India and Australia, two of the favourites to lift the T20 World Cup 2024 title, will square off in a high-stakes Super Eight at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia.
While the semi-finalists from Super 8 Group 2 are confirmed after South Africa’s win against West Indies earlier in the morning, the two semi-finalists from Group 1 are yet to be finalised. Three contenders – India, Australia and Afghanistan – are vying for two spots and at least one will be decided after tonight’s match between India and Australia.
With two wins in as many games, India are in pole position to seal a semi-final berth. But if Australia manage to clinch a big win and Afghanistan beat Bangladesh on Tuesday, things could get trickier for the Men in Blue. But with a much superior Net Run Rate, both Australia and Afghanistan have to win big.
But what if rain has the final say? What happens to India’s chances? What happens to Australia’s chances? And how will a washout impact Afghanistan’s future in the tournament?
What happens if the IND v AUS match is washed out?
There is an 89 per cent chance of rain in Guyana on Monday which means the chances of a washout are quite high. If that happens, India will move into the semi-finals, finishing first in Group 1 with five points.
While a will be music to the ears of Indian cricket fans, Australian supporters will be dreading the rain. A washout will take Australia to three points in the group and the only way they can enter the last four is if Bangladesh beat Afghanistan on Tuesday. If the result is the opposite, Australia will be knocked out of the competition.
