Coimbatore: Due to heavy rainfall, a holiday has been declared for schools in Valparai Taluk in Coimbatore district while holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Gudalur and Pandalur Taluks of Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, June 26.
Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely to occur at a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal today due to a change in the speed of westerly winds.Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places in the hilly areas of Nilgiri and Coimbatore districts, hilly areas of Tirupur, Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli districts and one or two places in Kanyakumari district, the Meteorological Department said.
Accordingly, the Valparai area located in the Western Ghats in the Coimbatore district is receiving continuous heavy rains. Due to this, Coimbatore District Governor Kranthi Kumar Badi has announced a holiday only for schools in Valparai. Similarly, District Collector Aruna has announced holiday for schools and colleges of Kudalur and Bandalur talukas in Nilgiris district due to heavy rains.
‘As Coimbatore sits in a rain shadow region mostly likely to end up with occasional light to moderate showers with cool cool weather. Places close to ghats and palakkad pass areas will receive moderate to at times heavy showers. People visiting Valparai need to be vigil,” according to weather blogger Sujai from Coimbatore.
