New Delhi: Team India skipper Rohit Sharma ensured that he fulfilled Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah’s promise by hosting the Indian flag at the Kensington Oval in Barbados after India beat South Africa in the final to lift the T20 World Cup 2024 title. India successfully defended a total of 176 runs to clinch a thrilling 7-run win in the summit clash to bring an end to their 17-year-long wait for a 2nd T20 World Cup trophy.
Asked to bat first in the final, India got off to a shaky start but Virat Kohli’s 76-run knock along with crucial knocks from Axar Patel (47) and Shivam Dube (27) helped them post a strong total of 176/7 on the board in 20 overs. India surpassed Australia to post the highest-ever total in a T20 World Cup final before their bowlers produced another excellent combined effort to script a famous victory for the Men in Blue.
India wrote history as they went on to win the title undefeated and became the first team to do so. India didn’t lose a single game in the tournament right from the group stage to the summit clash as they defeated the likes of Pakistan, Australia, Afghanistan, England and South Africa on their way to clinching glory.
As India brought an end to their 11-year-long ICC trophy drought, Rohit fulfilled Jay Shah’s promise by hoisting the Indian flag in Barbados. Earlier this year, Shah had promised that India will hoist their flag in Barbados after missing out on the 2023 ODI World Cup title closely last year.
“I want you to promise that in 2024, under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy we will surely hoist the Indian flag in Barbados. Jai Hind. Jai Bharat,” the BCCI secretary said at an event. His promise was completed by Rohit and the Indian team on Saturday.
