New Delhi: Indian athlete Gulveer Singh, on Saturday, shattered a 17-year-old national record in the men’s 3000m indoor race at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston. The Hangzhou Asian Games bronze medallist clocked a best time of 7:38.26eventually finishing second in the event and surpassing the previous record of 7:49.47 held by Indian athlete Surendar Singh back in 2008.
Surendar now serves as a coach. Gulveer has now set his eyes on securing automatic qualification for the 2025 World Athletics Championship in the men’s 10000 metre, where the entry mark is set at 27:00.0. Gulveer’s personal best and national record over 10000m outdoor track race is 27:14.88 while his personal best 5000m time is 13:11.82.

Who is Gulveer Singh?
Born in Sirsa village of Atrauli tehsil of Aligarh district in Uttar Pradesh, Indian athlete Gulveer Singh bagged a bronze medal in the 10000 metres race back in the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, the highlight of his professional career. Later at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok, he again won a bronze medal in the 10000 metres race while a gold medal in the same category n India’s national Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships.
Some of his other professional highlights are clocking a time of 13:11.82 in the 5000m category at the Yogibo Athletics Challenge Cup in 2024 while a recording a best time of 27:41.81 in 10000 metres at the San Juan Capistrano 2024. With some considerable professional achievements, Gulveer is being considered as prominent name who can represent Indian at the future global events.
Meanwhile at the Boston athletics, India’s Rahul also competed in the 3000m indoor race, clocking a time of 7:55.00, while Kartik Kumar finished the men’s 5000m indoor event in 14:04.67.
